We don’t know about you, but we are absolute suckers for enhanced versions of older games on newer consoles, eating up HD remasters and 1080p, 60fps ‘definitive editions’ like there’s no tomorrow.
That’s why the announcement of upscaled versions of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II: Renegade, Jak 3 and Jak X: Combat Racing coming to PlayStation 4 is very exciting indeed.
Once Crash Bandicoot: The N-Sane Trilogy comes out, all we’ll need is Crash Team Racingand we’ll have every Naughty Dog PlayStation exclusive on PS4.
While it’s a bit weird that these are just upscaled PS2 games as opposed to a full remastering like the Jak trilogy had last-gen, we think this is actually a good thing (and not just because Jak II was kinda glitchy on PS3).
While Microsoft has been absolutely killing it with its Xbox backwards compatibilityprogramme (in lieu of current-gen exclusives…), Sony’s PS2 Classics have been a bit underwhelming.
Don’t get us wrong, they look great and we love trophies, but apart from Ape Escape 2, Dark Chronicle and Grand Theft Auto, there isn’t much in terms of quantity or quality. Sporadically, a PS2 game will just… appear on the Store with no fanfare, and it’s not usually a must-buy.
So Sony announcing ahead of time that three amazing PS2 titles (and one not-great kart racer) are coming to PS4 gives us hope they are finally taking the PS2 Classics programme seriously.
Here’s hoping that other PS2 games that had a PS3 remastering get some sort of PS4 release. Just imagine Shadow of the Colossus, God of War II or even Okami in 1080p with all the sharing and Remote Play features of PS4.
