Apple’s First Foldable Won’t Be an iPhone, Says Samsung

While Samsung and Motorola continue introducing foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Motorola Razr, Apple has remained silent. And while we’ve heard rumors of an iPhone Flip coming in 2025, Samsung apparently knows that Apple’s first foldable won’t be a phone.

According to a report by The Elec, who gathered information from a Samsung Mobile Experience business meeting, Samsung knows what Apple is planning for the near future. The company reportedly said that while Apple will finally release its first foldable in 2024, not 2025, it won’t be an iPhone. Instead, the company plans to release a folding tablet or MacBook Fold.

If you were hoping for one of those classic Apple product announcements, where Tim Cook goes up on stage and says, “It’s an iPhone, it’s an iPad, it’s both,” don’t get your hopes up. At least not yet. Jumping right into a foldable phone could be risky, so starting with an iPad or a folding notebook makes sense.

This report matches comments from popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who recently stated on Twitter that the first folding iPhone won’t arrive until 2025 at the earliest. While it’s hard to know what the company has planned, it sounds like foldables are eventually on the way.

During that meeting, Samsung reportedly mentioned that in its home market of South Korea, iPhone users between the ages of 20-30 are switching to Samsung folding phones at a rate 3x higher than previous Samsung devices. That’s undoubtedly good news for Samsung, but Apple is likely aware of the situation and is working on a solution.

If you’re an iPhone user that loves the idea of a folding phone, you might have a few more years to wait before it becomes a reality.
